All engines need to be worked hard to get the best from them. The 1.6 is fine for cruising, the 1.7 is noisy and never feels comfortable and takes a long while to to work up to speed. It is economical, though. The 1.9 is the best choice, as it performs well with a full load.
Hard, almost permanently uncomfortable ride. Steering is light and direct, handling is quite sharp with little body roll for such a tall car, grip and roadholding are also above-average.
