MG Cyberster verdict
Should you buy one?
If you were hoping that the MG Cyberster would be a modern interpretation of the classic MGB, you’ll be sorely disappointed. However, as a two-seat, open-top grand tourer, it’s an intriguing proposition. It can’t match a Porsche 718 Boxster or BMW Z4 for driving fun, but the rapid acceleration, comfortable ride and refined road manners mean it’s not without its merits.
Its fancy doors will draw a crowd every time they open, and they help give the Cyberster a sense of occasion, but the tech on board is a little frustrating to use. Build quality is good enough to justify the car’s asking price, although a few more physical controls wouldn’t go amiss.
The big battery contributes to the car’s character as a grand tourer because of its weight, but the official range figures mean it’s viable for long-distance trips, too. We’d stick with the Trophy model over the GT, because while the latter is crazily fast, the former is rapid enough in most instances.
What we like
The Cyberster is surprisingly comfortable for a two-seat sports car, plus it has the added bonus of offering top-down driving when the weather is right. The car’s long range means you don’t have to keep an eye on your battery levels, either.
What we don’t like
The car’s sheer size means it’s unwieldy on narrow UK roads, and we just wish it were a bit nimbler. The styling looks sharp, although the rear lights are a bit OTT with their big arrows. The car’s safety systems can be a little intrusive with their warning beeps, too.
