MG MG4 boot space, practicality and safety
- Plenty of storage up front
- More space in rear than similarly priced rivals
- Cupra Born and VW ID.3 are bigger inside
The MG4 EV is about the same size as a Cupra Born and VW ID.3 but a little lower, so you sit less upright. Space up front won’t be an issue at all, with a driver’s seat that goes a long way back, good headroom and plenty of clearance between you and the person sat next to you.
Move to the rear seats and things are a bit tighter. Stick a 6ft 2in rear passenger behind a similarly-sized driver and they’ll find their knees close to the backs of the front seats and not much clearance above their head, either. It’s a little better than a Megane, but you’ll have slightly more breathing room in the Born and ID.3
It is worth pointing out that while the MG4 EV is beaten for space by similarly sized rivals, those that cost a similar amount (and aren’t made by MG) such as the Fiat 500 Electric are far smaller inside.
Boot space and storage
The boot is a good square shape, with a cubby to allow you to keep the charging cables underneath it. SE models do without a variable height boot floor, with this feature being standard on Trophy trim.
With the rear seats up, there’s 363 litres of space in the MG4’s boot, slightly down on the Born and ID.3’s 385 litres and massively below the Megane and its 440-litre cavern. Once again, the MG4 EV has much more space than similarly priced rivals.
What you won’t find is any clever storage under the bonnet, although that’s the case with the aforementioned rivals, too. As for interior space, there’s nothing particularly clever with a large open tray between the front seats, cupholders, a glovebox and door bins, but there is an awful lot of cubby areas to empty your pockets into.
Is it easy to park?
The MG4 EV isn’t a particularly big car and has much better rear visibility than the Megane with its tiny back window. The rear pillars are still quite thick, so it’s handy all models come with parking sensors at the back to help protect your paintwork.
Upgrade to a Trophy model and you also gain a 360-degree camera system. The resolution isn’t the sharpest out there, but it’s good enough to be useful when manoeuvring in tight spots
Safety
- Five-star Euro NCAP rating
- Lots of standard safety kit
- Trophy adds even more
The MG4 EV scored five stars in its Euro NCAP test, which is a great score for a firm not always associated with cutting-edge safety. It’s based on a modern platform, with a stiff battery compartment forming the car’s backbone – usually a good sign for rigidity.
The brand’s ‘MG Pilot’ safety systems come as standard, with all getting autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and a driver attention alert.
Top-spec Trophy cars add blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a system to warn you if anybody’s coming up behind you before you open the door from inside. We had no issues with the adaptive cruise control on test, but the steering assist isn’t the best we’ve experienced. All models get two Isofix mounts, one on each outer rear seat, and six airbags.
