MG RV8 (1993 - 1997) RV 8 2d Owner Review
In their own words
This car had a difficult birth and was pitched directly against the Mercedes Benz SL when new, so was always a tough sell. 25 years later though these cars are something rather special. These are now quite rare, full of charm and charisma and have a soundtrack that turns heads wherever you go. The lines are stunning from every angle and unlike my MGB Roadster, I can drive it through heavy rain and remain bone dry! The performance is fabulous and will leave most Euro-boxes in it’s dust whilst returning a genuine 35MPG on a run. I suspect the value will increase gently over the coming years as their rarity increases, but don’t buy one for that reason. Buy one for the driving experience, safe in the knowledge that you have a rare car that will turn heads and put a huge smile on your face every time you drive it. Spares are readily available and sensibly priced apart from the headlights (supplied by Porsche) and rear lights, so careful when parking it! Don’t pay a premium for a colour other than green. The (Woodcote) Green sold more than the other colours because it looks stunning and really suits the car! Removing the central resonator box from the exhaust makes a positive difference to the way the car sounds without being intrusive. Buy the best one you can find and be prepared to pay up to £30,000 for an immaculately prepared and maintained example.
There are a few examples that have been repatriated from Japan but provided they have a full service history there is no reason why these examples should be viewed negatively as they were normally purchased by Japanese MG enthusiasts and collectors so will have been well looked after and cherished.
How reliable do you find the car?
I purchased the car with 2 blown head gaskets and some corrosion around the headlight cowls. The alternator needed a refurbishment and I have replacement the bushes and bump stops. Having done those jobs the car is now a fabulous drive and puts a massive smile on my face every time I get in it!Does the car do everything you expected it to do?
The steering wheel is slightly offset, the rear view mirror needed repositioning as you couldn’t see around left hand corner and the ride can be choppy over rough roads, but I adore this car! It’s a real gem!About their car
