Should you buy one?

Yes, if you’re after a bargain. The S5 EV feels like good value for money. The interior is solid, the driving experience is pleasant and the kit list is extensive for the price. I’d probably opt for the bigger 64kWh battery and 298-mile range, though additional testing is needed to find out how accurate that range figure really is. Notwithstanding, the S5’s dull, business-like character holds it back a little.

It’s a car I’d find difficult to get excited about, and if you’re buying a new vehicle – no matter the price – I think you should be filled with that emotion. Perhaps it’s down to personal taste, but I think there are more characterful alternatives out there for not much more money.

What we like

The MGS5 has a smart and solid interior, featuring a range of materials that break up the surface textures well. It’s reasonably comfortable on the road and great value to buy.

What we don’t like

Though good value, the S5 is painfully dull, while its rivals are more refined. It drives okay but the steering could be a bit more responsive and the ride a bit softer.
