Mitsubishi Colt 1.3 GLX 3d (1998/S) Owner Review

Economy
Value
Better equipped than some rivals. Shop around and you'll find a winner.
Costs
Relatively economical, incredibly reliable, but avoid main dealers. The car is simple under the bonnet, so anyone can have a go at servicing the car themselves. The colt is the same insurance as many 1.1 litre cars, and its the lowest tax bracket.

On the road
Driving
Best Supermini I've ever driven. The perfect compromise for someone desiring German reliability and Italian flare.
Performance
Corners precisely with good steering feedback. Sportier than German or French rivals, and the 1.3 litre 12valve engine is surprisingly punchy, developing 75bhp. Upgrade the brakes and the car will feel sportier.

Living with it
Reliability
When viewing a colt to buy, check the main problem spots: Front wheel bearings and corroded bodywork. Other than these, the car is incredibly reliable.
Image
Certainly not a car to be ashamed of. The car has a low stance, and the looks have remained fresh. They're also exclusive there are few on the roads.
Comfort
Generally fine, but at high speeds the engine feels a bit unrefined. The suspension is firmer than other cars, making the ride bumpy occasionally. Some less basic models have aircon, though.

Security and Service
Security
The colt has a basic engine immobiliser, but it may be worth investing in other security measures.
Service
Main dealers are too expensive. Service wasn't bad, but not great either.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Absolutely bullet-proof. General service, with belts, plugs, leads & oil change at 65k miles, and she's still going strong.
Other
Nothing other than a minor niggle - Passenger side electric window was notchy, easy fix.
