The standard Lancer – on which the Evo X is based – was one of the first models to undergo Euro NCAPs more stringent crash tests in 2009. The new overall rating covers not only adult occupant safety but includes child and pedestrian safety along with a rear impact whiplash test. It scored the maximum five stars and all models come with seven airbags, including a driver’s knee airbag and side and curtain airbags, along with Isofix seat anchor points in the rear.

The Evo X also has an adaptive front lighting system that lights up the inside of corners increasing the area of road illuminated. The Super All-Wheel Control system (S-AWC for short) features several systems including active stability control and a sport-based ABS. In terms of security the Evo is fitted with an alarm and immobiliser as well as a tracker device that will not allow the engine to start without the presence of a security transponder that you’re encouraged to carry separately to prevent the car being stolen even if your keys are.

Rear passenger space is fairly generous in the Evo and the seats are comfortable, but the 400-litre boot doesn’t seem as big as the figures suggest. Not only is it shallow but the opening isn’t particularly big – annoyingly you can only open it using the key fob or a lever by the driver’s seat. There’s no handle on the inside either, so you end up getting dirty hands every time you close it.

The Rockford Fosgate audio system, which comes as standard on the GSR model, includes a subwoofer in the boot which takes up even more room and with no split-fold option on the rear seats practicality is limited. Stowage is average in the front with two central cupholders and decent door pockets.
