Economy
Value
Paid £15k from a Nissan dealer for a 6 month old car.
Costs
Now done nearly 60k miles in under 2 years. No faults. New pads all round at 55k miles. Front tyres last about 30k. Shop around for servicing and barter, 9k = £90, 18k = £150. Cheaper to run than a Mondeo, except in petrol. Go for the diesel engine.

Driving
Nice high driving position, comfortable motorway cruiser. Like most 4x4s, it is not at its best pressing on along country lanes, but you can see over the hedgerows.
Performance
Don't expect to win the traffic light Grand Prix.

Living with it
Reliability
Had 2 recalls under warrenty. Never failed me yet. If Ford had dealers as considerate as Nissan, they would sell a lot more cars.
Image
Nissan badge was reminiscant of 1980's Datsun taxi, but it is changing its image (see 350Z). X-Trail has Freelander's rugged looks but doesn't fall to pieces as you drive it.
Comfort
Enough toys on sport model, but seat fabric is poor and ages quickly, go for leather.

Security and Service
Service
Having had a Ford company car for years, I was surprised to learn that other manufacturers actually have dealers who don't see their customers as an inconvenience.
