The X-Trail feels sturdily built and this is supported by its four-star Euro NCAP rating – very good for its age. All models get ABS, driver and passenger airbags, plus Sport and SE have side airbags, too. On the safety front, remote central locking, an anti-hijack feature and an immobiliser are all standard, as is an ultrasonic alarm on Sport and SE models.

X-Trail has a quirky, but highly practical interior. A neat touch is a can-cooler that’s integrated into the dash, but it’s not available on all models. Too many cubby bins to mention, they’re on the dash, in the doors, in the back… everywhere. Generous amount of rear luggage space.
