Perodua Myvi Hatchback (2006-2015) engines, drive and performance

The 85bhp 1.3-litre engine is the only powerplant on offer, but it’s a flexible unit and gives the Myvi a good turn of speed, getting to 62mph in 11.3 seconds and on to a top speed of 102mph. It’s a lively and peppy unit, so around town it feels even faster than that and Myvi nips in-and-out of lines of traffic with ease. It’s not out of its depth on the motorway, either, where it keeps up with traffic well, although a downchange is sometimes needed for overtaking.
Unusually there’s also an automatic transmission available – a rather leisurely but smooth four-speed, although this means the 0-62mph time drops to 13 seconds.
The Myvi is an easy car to drive. Light steering and a tight turning circle make it great for town or city driving and excellent when it comes to parking. It’s a light car, so the 1.3-litre engine is more than up to the job of hauling it around. It’s good fun to drive too, with good grip for a car of this size and acceptable bodyroll. The ride is pretty good, soaking up most lumps and bumps.
