Economy
Value
Paid £2600 privately for a '98 R reg in superb condition, still below book price. Parts are relatively cheap from a main dealer, not that I needed any.
Costs
Amazingly good MPG, (anywhere up to 60), even around town. You can flog it if you want to and it'll still run on fresh air. Service cheap too from independent. Accelerator cable snapped one day, cheap fix - £20 for full kit from main dealer.

On the road
Driving
Handles pretty well, steering well-weighted, good solid gearchange, fairly grippy. Be sure to get one with PAS as they can be a handful in tight-spots without it.
Performance
Fairly nippy considering it's a small capacity diesel and only got 60 BHP. Fast enough for most needs. Been up-hill and down-dale like a little mountain goat.

Living with it
Reliability
Superb. Never let me down. Always started first time with not so much as a hiccup.
Image
Not as mean-looking as the GTI or Quicksilver models but, like most hatches, can be easily ungraded.
Comfort
Comfy, supportive seats. However, my back did begin to ache after several hours motoring, understandable. Engine noise harsh on start-up but reduces considerably as speed increases and warms-up. Only problem was a leaking roof, where the ariel fixes on.

Security and Service
Security
Thankfully never had it broken into or tampered with. Comes with immobiliser, but no alarm that i'm aware of.
Service
Never used main dealer for service, although told reasonable.
