Peugeot 106 Hatchback (1991-2003) engines, drive and performance

There’s a good selection of engines, from the humdrum, yet frugal 1.0-litre to the genuinely quick 16v 1.6. Most models are 1.1 or 1.4-litre petrols and both are good choices for performance, economy and reliability. The 1.6 16V GTi is by far the quickest off the mark, sprinting from 0-60mph in 8.4 seconds: a full ten seconds quicker than the dawdling 1.0-litre.
Feels raw, direct and basic which bizarrely makes the base models feel crude and the sporty ones feel extra sporty. Firm suspension and harsh over bumps. Noisy inside, but great fun if you’re in the mood.
