Peugeot 306 Hatchback 1.6 XS 3d (AC) (1998/R) Owner Review

Economy
Value
I stupidly paid over the odds at a main dealer.
Costs
Needed a new battery and a new exhaust (rear and mid section) - about £120 worth in total (plus tyres of course). £40 for a full tank takes me 450 miles for commuting.

On the road
Driving
Quick enough to get me 6 points, but still wish I'd gone for a turbo diesel instead of a petrol. 4000rpm at 80mph doesn't give the best economy for motorway driving.
Performance
Not as quick as it looks. At least the insurance was a bit cheaper.

Living with it
Reliability
Doesn't like to stand for more than a day or so.
Image
Still a smart looking car, I find myself admiring it when I've washed it.
Comfort
Nice buckety seats, good visibility, plenty of leg room (but then I don't have to sit in the back). Gives a surprising amount of room in the boot with the back seats folded down.

Security and Service
Security
Deadlocks are fine, but no alarm or immobiliser?!?
Service
Fairly stupid staff at the Peugeot main dealer (Colchester Avenue, Cardiff). Maybe they've changed since then...

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Sounds a bit more tappety than it should. A little bit gunky around the head - leaky gasket?
Other
Air conditioning went in 2002, as did the stereo. Suffers from a bit of wind noise at speed. Fog bulbs went so often, I gave up replacing them (partly as they're really inaccessible).
Ownership
Did you buy the car new?
Used
Would you buy the same model again?
No
Did you buy from the same manufacturer again?
Yes
