Peugeot 306 Hatchback 1.9 XRDT 5d (1993/L) Owner Review

Economy
Value
33mpg when pushing it, 40mpg when being careful. Older car means more work needs doing, so I'll drive the car until it falls apart then buy a 406. Decent sound system with some kick, steering column controls, front power windows and little else.
Costs
Insurance very low, MPG is pretty healthy, saving myself £1200 per year compared to my last car. Cheap runabout.

On the road
Driving
Handling no match for a 406, back end swings out in the wet, scary handling even in a straight line. A 406 is much more fun.
Performance
3 stars for startling straight-line grunt outran a Golf GTi (yes, really), boy racers no match for the 306 TDi and its massive torque curve. Derv Doctor will tune from 92bhp to 115bhp for £141 all told flies with 18psi turbo and still returns 35mpg.

Living with it
Reliability
Have had problems with leaking steering racks and other unidentified but minor leaks. Engine amazing, will last forever. Car has a good few years ahead of it.
Image
Old, in white, but surprisingly attractive for its age, and with a very refined TDi unit. It's not a sports car by any stretch but people falsely believe it is (even a few owners).
Comfort
Too small, seats are child-sized (I'm 5'11""), no elbow room, feet caught on pedals until I adapted, no steering wheel adjust. Not a thing of luxury by any stretch those who say it is are lying.

Security and Service
Security
Remote central locking.
Service
Peugeot ""service"" is a joke - they're full of crap. Will deal with it myself and save myself a few grand.
