Economy
Value
2nd hand values hold well. this is a sort after model, reflected by dealer prices. Only buy a quality version with all history/service etc, be prepared to travel. I travelled 150miles to buy mine.
Costs
Breaks rear disks and pads £126, front pads £70, tyres £100(branded)-all dealer costs.

On the road
Driving
Very ergonomic cockpit, steering is precise with well balanced power assisted steering. Clutch is responsive and throttle sensitive.
Performance
The 2.0 8v delivers strong progressive acceleration, it will pull through the gears up to the top speed which feels limited by the final drive of the gearbox. Very balanced through the corners with mild understeer if pushed.

Living with it
Reliability
Feels very strong and reliable. Mine won't start first time every time, a sign of expensive trouble ahead? Otherwise brilliant.
Image
A hatch with all the right curves. Pre-face lift 97' models are best, they look more aggressive and come with side skirts. Put a private plate on an immaculate version and no one will know its 10yrs old.
Comfort
The front seats are seemingly supportive, the 'bucket' style holds you tight with a headrest that actually adjusts to suit you. However long journeys become uncomfortable with a poor height adjust.

Security and Service
Security
Deadlocks are invaluable, you can leave all windows open knowing no one will be able to open your door. Immobiliser keypad means leaving keys in the ignition whilst filling up is safe. Alarm is trouble. Self activates most nights! Expensive to fix.
Service
Expensive labour charges per hour from dealer, older cars treated as second class with longer booking periods. Dealer history a must to retain max value.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Not the quietest! with a large oil sump piston slap is evident on cold starts, routine oil change is a must.
Other
The finish on the standard alloy wheels is prone to corrosion and look unsightly if corroded. Can be rectified for as little as £30 and a full weekend.
