Just like the hatch there’s an unusually tiny steering wheel and a raised instrument cluster so that you view the dials over rather than through the steering wheel.

On all but the base Access model, a 9.7-inch touchscreen takes care of almost all the cabin’s controls including the air-con, navigation, multimedia, and telephone functions, among others. Many users may find this a bit fiddly to start with, but you do get used to it over time.

An electric parking brake switch rather than a conventional handbrake is fitted, again apart from on the Access where you get a good old-fashioned proper handbrake.

Like the hatchback, Peugeot 308 SW comfort levels are one of the car’s strengths. Ride quality is forgiving over lumpy road surfaces and the new PureTech petrol and BlueHDi diesel engines are soothingly quiet.

A variety of seat designs are available depending on trim, but each one we tried felt comfortable over long distances.

Knee and headroom is reasonable for rear passengers and there’s plenty of space up front.
