Peugeot 4007 safety isn’t much of a concern. The 4007 hasn’t been crash tested, but the near identical Mitsubishi Outlander was awarded four stars for adult occupant safety in Euro NCAP crash tests which is respectable and on par with other offroaders such as the Toyota RAV4, Nissan X-Trail and Chevrolet Captiva. Electronic stability control, which helps correct the car’s line when the driver loses control in a skid, is fitted as standard, as well as twin front, side and curtain airbags.

The passenger airbag can be switched off to allow a rear-facing child seat to be installed in the front. All three second row seats have Isofix child-seat mounting points.

Most of the time the 4007 is intended to be used as a five-seater and has a minimum luggage capacity of 441 litres up to the window. This can be increased to 510 litres with the second-row seats slid forward. Maximum luggage capacity (with all the seats folded) is 1,686 litres but despite these impressive numbers the boot area is actually quite narrow due to the wheelarches eating into the space.

The second row of seats folds down simply. However with seven seats in use the boot is tiny and the seats are incredibly fiddly to put up and fold down again – the system is far from intuitive and even with instructions it’s a long-winded affair, with three straps and an awkward folding mechanism. On the plus side, the tailgate opening is split, allowing a flat loading area with the lower portion open.

This means there is no sill to lift heavy items over and the lower tailgate portion can also support a load of 200kg. Maximum towing capacity is 2000k while up front there is a split level glove compartment, as well as generous door bins and front centre armrest.
