Peugeot 405 Saloon 1988

    Value

    4 out of 5 4.0

Good overall value, don't pay over a £1000 for any Peugeot 405 now though.

    Costs

    4 out of 5 4.0

Really good costs, just only buy parts from Peugeot if you can't get them elsewhere. Suspension bushing is best bought from Peugeot though.

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

Good steering feel and composure, easy to drive in all conditions.

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

Fast and economical once it's going. Tuning potential in the later TDi models is amazing, easily on par with TDi 130 Golfs etc.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

Pretty good. Keep on top of servicing and I hear they go for 250,000 miles alright. Radiators and heat exchangers can be a pain to sort, cambelt changes essential. Don't use main dealer muppets, DIY!

Still quite good considering some of the very latest Peugeots. Lowering is a good idea, and the 306 GTi 6 alloys work well with the car too! Half leather is a must also.

    Comfort

    3 out of 5 3.0

Not the best. Too high and squished up to the wheel. Need short legs and long body to be really comfortable. Half leather or sports seats a better option all round!

  • Security and Service

    Security

    2 out of 5 2.0

Never been stolen yet, and they are pretty tough to get going (diesel cut off switch), but the locks on 405s are ok at best. Sometimes the central locking clicks, but not all the locks engage.

    Service

    1 out of 5 1.0

    Pay peanuts, you get monkeys!

  • Problems and Ownership

Strong and robust when looked after, can go down hill fast if abused.

    Other

Door locks are the biggest single frustration.
