    Value

5500 Euro (£3750) for a five year old 406 in Ireland is good value. The car was a fairly good example too.

    Costs

Decent on fuel, especially out of town. I get about 36mpg combined, which is better than I feared from a 1.8L

Great to drive. One of the first things I noticed when I took the wheel was the handling - it's sweet. The gearbox is good too. Everything feels precise and responsive.

    Performance

    3 out of 5 3.0

The 1.8 is a little underpowered - it's a big car, and it takes a lot of engine to pull it along. Not slow by any means, but not exhilarating either. Lovely cruising.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

No mechanical problems. Had a Brake Fluid Level Low warning down to a faulty microswitch. It had to be replaced.

Still a very good looking car. Pininfarina did a good job on the styling.

    Comfort

    4 out of 5 4.0

Nice for the driver and front passenger, ample room for even tall people in the back. Decent trim, not like newest cars though.

  • Security and Service

Alarm and immobiliser. No deadlocks on mine.

    Service

Haven't had any problems from my local Peugeot dealer. They fixed a known problem with a faulty brake fluid level sensor.
