Should you buy one?

Yes, if you like left-of-centre cars. Because the fundamental question to ask yourself about the Peugeot 408 is whether you love or hate the design. If you love it, you’ll find a comfortable, premium-feeling car that’s uncommonly good to drive in many circumstances and turns heads. Luckily, it’s a car of such quality that you can justify it on rational as well as emotional grounds.

The premium you pay for that striking fastback design is reduced practicality in the rear and a high price whether you’re paying cash or taking out a finance plan – something put into sharp focus by the super-competitive pricing of its Citroen C5 X sister car. While it’ll be worth it to some, there are better options out there if you put head above heart.

Finally, it’s interesting that Peugeot markets this car as an SUV – but in reality, it’s a big family hatchback with a few fripperies, such as plastic wheelarch extensions, a slight suspension lift, and gently elevated driving position, applied. If that means people buy these cars in a world where large family hatchbacks are becoming increasingly out of fashion.

What we like

The 408’s hybrid powertrains are the best we’ve tried yet from the Stellantis group, being smooth, powerful and refined. It also feels premium and well-built inside, with high-tech features that work well.

What we don’t like

The looks and unconventional seating position won’t be to everyone’s taste, and it’s a shame that the rear seats lack headroom and reduce overall practicality in what should be an ideal family car.
