Should you buy one?

The Peugeot 5008 is likeable and very capable, making it one of the best seven-seat SUVs available on the market. The interior is a delight from the way it looks to the way it functions, and the individual seats could be a real boon to many family buyers – especially those with young children still requiring Isofix seats.

Peugeot’s armed the 5008 with competitive pricing and generous levels of equipment, and while the engine range is limited there is now at least something to please most buyers. The 1.2-litre petrol has character and enthusiasm, and is good around town. The 1.5-litre diesel is better for longer distances. And the newer petrol-electric self-charging hybrid aims to bridge the gap between the two.

It’s still a shame there’s no plug-in hybrid, as there is in the smaller Peugeot 3008. But this simply isn’t compatible with the 5008’s extra seating. There are some keen rivals, ranging from the SEAT Tarraco to the Mercedes GLB, but the 5008 is well worth a much closer look.

What we like

The 5008 is characterful and refined, with more flexible seating than most seven-seater SUVs and a driving experience that’s comfortable and confidence inspiring.

What we don’t like

There are only three engines to choose from, and you can no longer have a manual gearbox – which has driven prices up slightly.
