Peugeot e-2008 review (2023)

In their own words

This isn't my car; it's my wife's. She loves it and wouldn't be remotely interested in leaving a review but I drive it occasionally, and for better and for worse, I feel compelled to share my experience.
This is 'our' first EV. I was sceptical but she was determined to make the switch to 'greener' motoring, and I don't mind admitting she was right. Overall, it's a great drive - responsive, well-balanced, quiet, tall and spacious enough to suit a small driver, a pair of kids and luggage, but without feeling too big. It's good looking, and Peugeot's dash design is genuinely appealing, cool even, bordering on genius with the 3D driver's display. BUT I'd never get one, or anything from the same family such as the 508 I had been eyeing up, for a handful of reasons.
Firstly, the driving position: seated, in control, it's a nice, easy, comfortable, place to be, and the idea of viewing the dash over the steering wheel, rather than through it, really works. But the wheel's low position makes it severely obstructive to taller drivers when entering and exiting the vehicle. The only way in is via a crotch-ripping manoeuvre to insert your left knee fully across the wheel while keeping your right foot planted on the tarmac outside the car. If only a motor could raise the wheel a little when parked and lower it again to the driving position on the press of 'start'. But no, not even on the 'top spec' car. So wear loose trousers. Or none at all.
Secondly, the removal of dashboard knobs and buttons in favour of a centralised touchscreen system initially appears tidy, but soon turns frustrating when you can't quickly access controls you're accustomed to having at your fingertips, such as air-con or temperature. Warmer, cooler, no quick tap or twist here, just a concentration-stealing dive into a multi-function screen. Plus, the air flow selectors seem bizarrely linked, so you can't open dash and footwell vents together, or you have to choose between keeping your windscreen clear and defrosting your toes. And you can't access the climate controls at all when some other system needs the screen.
Three driving modes do make a discernible difference to the way the car responds, but the selector itself is very sluggish, not engaging the mode on touch, but waiting for the display to tell you what it's going to do and perhaps wondering if you want to change your mind again, before eventually giving you what you asked for several seconds earlier.
To top it all off, the main dealer has been very poor at rectifying known problems, keeping us waiting months for major parts then needing to keep the car for days while the work is carried out. It's all such a shame because these are potentially fantastic cars. The e-308 we've had on loan while awaiting repairs is beautiful to sit in and drives so brilliantly, but if I can't get in and out without splitting my jeans, or turn on the air-con without drifting out of my lane, it's never going to be my car. But you might feel how my wife does, just shrug and say 'I don't mind'.
