Porsche 911 Cabriolet boot space, practicality and safety

  • No Euro NCAP rating
  • New roll-over protection
  • Loads of tech available

Porsche hasn’t subjected the 911 to the rigours of the Euro NCAP crash test so it’s hard to say definitively how it’ll perform in an accident, but we can report on the technology deployed to help keep you safe.

For a start there is a new roll-over protection system – an aluminium frame that is triggered to pop-out from behind the rear seats when the car detects it is about to turn over, even when the roof is closed.

Porsche 911 Cabriolet headlights

All cars come with bright LED headlights to help you see and be seen (matrix LED units are available as an option) and an autonomous city braking system as standard too, as are front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera.

There’s also a wet mode to enhance safety when driving in damp or soggy conditions – we’ve explained this a bit more fully in the Handling section.

Customers can pay extra for adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and a lane keeping aid with traffic sign recognition.

A night vision and thermal imaging camera is available at a cost too, useful for detecting animals or people at night that may be invisible to the eye.

  • Good space for two, limited for four
  • Longer and a bit wider than previous 911
  • Front boot is city car sized

Passenger space up front is excellent with broadly the same headroom as the 911 Coupe – there really is no penalty when it comes to driver and passenger comfort over the hard top.

That said, if you want even more head space you can enjoy acres of open sky by opening the roof. This takes 12 seconds and can be done at speeds up to 30mph, which is really rather good.

The rear seats are, as usual, occasional at best. Children will be ok behind a reasonably tall driver but anyone larger than a teenager will be quite uncomfortable.

Porsche 911 Cabriolet roof

While its wheelbase remains the same the Porsche 911 Convertible is a little bigger overall than its predecessor – 20mm longer and with 45mm extra track width front and rear.

It’s still not huge, obviously, but worth taking these extra millimetres into account if you have a particularly tight garage or car cover you’d like to reuse.

Porsche 911 Cabriolet front

Given that the back of the car is full of engine and the middle is where the roof and its mechanisms are stored, you won’t be surprised to hear that boot space is a bit limited.

There’s a reasonably large front trunk (or ‘frunk’, if you like) offering 132-litres of space, similar to what you get in a city car – it’s good enough for a couple of squashy bags, but not much else.

That said, because it’s in the front of the car there is no difference in luggage capacity between the Coupe and the Cabriolet, so outright practicality is oddly not affected by the fabric roof.

You can also store things on the rear seats too, but overall it’s worth bearing in mind when packing for a trip that this is a sports car rather than a practical family hatchback. Ikea is also out of the question.
