Porsche 911 Coupe (2019-2024) boot space, practicality and safety
- Front passengers well catered for…
- Rear seats are only suitable for kids
- Front boot a usable size but not huge
How much space is there?
If you’re sat in the front of the 992-generation Porsche 911 you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how much head, shoulder and legroom there is. It’s not palatial, but it’s far from snug so even tall adults will be able to get comfortable. The driving position is first-rate and you can see out very clearly – making this one of the easiest sports cars to drive around town.
It’s a different story if you’re relegated to the rear. The rear seats are designed for kids – think pre-teens – due to their restricted head and legroom. And even then you’ll need to carefully consider what car seat to use (Porsche unsurprisingly sells its own). As such, the rear compartment of the 911 is better thought of as additional storage space for luggage.
If you do intend to fit more than two in your 911, you’ll need to avoid the GT3 versions. These do without rear seats entirely to save weight and you can’t re-add them as an extra. The Carrera T also deletes them, but you can at least option them back in.
Boot space and storage
There’s not as much stowage space inside as we’d like, with slender door pockets, limited storage under the central armrest and a small cubby behind the gearlever. The driver’s cupholder slots into this with the passenger’s popping out of the dashboard. A few larger cubbies to empty your pockets into would be welcome.
With the engine slung right out back, you open the bonnet to access the modest 132-litre boot. That’s well below most city cars, but there’s still enough space for a couple of squishy overnight bags or a reasonable shop. However, of more use – providing you don’t need the rear seats – is the carpeted shelf created when you fold each of them over. Doing so creates a 264-litre space between the back of the front seats and the rear screen.
Combined, these two areas give a useful amount of space that makes a driving holiday for two perfectly feasible.
Is it easy to park?
The 911 can be daunting to manoeuvre at first thanks to its low seating position, wide arches and narrower passenger compartment, especially if there are kerbs nearby waiting to take chunks out of the alloy wheels. We promise that you do get used to it, although the 911 isn’t as compact as it once was, a fact hammered home when we opened the long doors and tried to squeeze ourselves out when in a tight parking space.
Thankfully the windows are pretty big for a sports car and parking sensors front and rear are standard on all but GT3 models, with a reversing camera standard on Turbo and Turbo S. A reversing camera is available at extra cost on every other model, coming bundled with rear parking sensors on the GT3; all but the GT3 get the option of a surround view camera as well.
Safety
- Unlikely to be tested by Euro NCAP
- This is no reason to worry, though
- Plenty of safety kit on the options list
Euro NCAP hasn’t tested the 911 and is unlikely to any time soon. However, Porsche knows how to make a safe structure and has access to Volkswagen Group’s vast array of safety tech.
As standard, each 911 has automatic emergency braking, six airbags and advanced electronic assistance to keep you on the road. There’s also a single Isofix child seat-mounting point on the front passenger seat.
You can further upgrade this raft of safety kit with an array of options including LED Matrix headlamps, adaptive cruise control, Night Vision Assist and Lane Change Assist, among a wealth of other options.
