Porsche 944 Coupe Turbo SE FH 2d (1989/F) Owner Review

Economy
Value
Nothing can replace this car for me for less than £12,000. Even E36 M3 Evos aren't as exciting.
Costs
Main dealer parts can be cheap for small items. Plenty of dismantlers around, but nothing ever breaks! 13-17mpg can be a problem if you like your booooost. Only £327 for fully comp insurance on classic policy.

On the road
Driving
Best on motorways at 90 or twisty A-roads in the country. But as said before, tramlines in lorry ruts. Spring assisted clutch makes life easy. Big turbo lag out of busy junctions can cause bogging down.
Performance
Booooost, handles like a dream and also does sideways if required.

Living with it
Reliability
Bombproof. Only one big job - head gasket, £40 from main dealer, changed it myself when I first got car, easy to work on. Only time it ever broke down was selecting 3rd gear on motorway instead of 5th (at 130mph). Snapped rotor arm clean off.
Image
Bit dated. Turbo looks best with better front bumper and under spoiler, I love it and it looks good on the driveway.
Comfort
I'm 6ft 4" and I don't have the seat all the way back. But geting in and out requires a good technique but I've been doing it for 6 years.

Security and Service
Security
Catagory 1 Laserline, but even the insurance company don't require them anymore. They're not interested, who's gonna nick a 15 year old car?
Service
Always pleasant, even when just giving advice.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Head gasket - Porsche reckons they are comsumable and wear out. Balance belts need looking at every now and again (I've never changed them and I've had my car for years).
Other
Air con never works. I looked at 20 before I bought one and never saw one that worked.
