When buying a 20yo car, especially a sports car that is very likely to have been driven more enthusiastically, it’s common sense to focus on the mechanics and technical elements that give it its character, hence I sorted the RMS just for caution (it was fine), brakes and cooling as well as getting suspension, tracking etc checked. In total this Boxster stands me at £10200 after work. In return I’ve a really fun drive, quick enough and with the handling to make me smile, modern enough not to feel ‘old’ yet much more raw than recent cars (incl Porsches). The surprise also has been my wife liking it, I’d originally bought it to run for a few months (injured my leg so couldn’t ride my motorcycle) but it’s become the car we find excuses to take out. Another surprise has been that it’s ULEZ compliant in UK and Crit Air 2 in France, this wasn’t a purchase criteria but good to have.
How reliable do you find the car?
It’s a 20yo car that is overall in great condition- and I expected age-related and known issues so replaced most brake pipes (age corrosion) and coolant pipes / crossover (just age related) as well as having the RMS replaced (known issues, IMS already done). After doing these the car is in good order and everything works as it should.
Does the car do everything you expected it to do?
This is my 5th Porsche, always 911’s until this one which was bought as a deliberately cheap fun car. I’ve been surprised how much fun it is to drive, l expected it to feel slow (my other car is over 500bhp) but it’s punchy enough to feel quick, balance is excellent and it’s become my favourite drive (in good weather, it’s not a daily). Plenty of room in both front / rear storage so we’ve used it for long weekends and now plan to take it through France in June.
