Proton Impian Saloon (2001-2007) engines, drive and performance

Just one engine available, a Mitsubishi-sourced 1.6 petrol. It’s surprisingly frugal (42mpg on the combined cycle), although it’s noisy, needs to be worked hard and struggles to get up to motorway speeds.
Proton left this to Lotus – and they’ve done a good job. It’s a responsive car to drive, with little roll, direct steering and plenty of grip. Ride quality is better than you would expect – far better than older Protons.
