Proton Mpi Hatchback 1989-
  • Economy

    Value

    4 out of 5 4.0

We probably paid a little over the odds for ours but a decent selection of gadgets for your money.

    Costs

    3 out of 5 3.0

Cheap motoring offset by above average cost of spare parts for anything more than a basic service.

  • On the road

    Driving

    2 out of 5 2.0

Roadholding not exactly in the World Rally class. Control positions a tad eccentric but it grows on you. Very light steering ideal for town and parking but quite involving at speed.

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

1.5 lump is nobodys' racing car but a very willing performer... and quite a pleasing noise! Good in traffic, can hold its own on motorways.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    5 out of 5 5.0

30,000 miles has cost us the requisite services and two new tyres only. Keep the rear wiper fixings as originals only seem to be available from dealers... bit of a pain, that!

Calvin Klein seen driving one? ... only with a bag on his head!

    Comfort

    4 out of 5 4.0

Not bad considering the age of the design.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    2 out of 5 2.0

If Fisher-Price made one it would have stronger locks than the original. However, who heard of joy-riders targeting Protons? The best anti-theft device is the badge on the boot that says "Proton"!

    Service

    3 out of 5 3.0

Not really had much dealer contact .
