Renault 21 Estate 1986-
  • Economy

    Value

    5 out of 5 5.0

If you need a practical diesel estate car on a ridiculously low budget, this is the one to buy.

    Costs

    3 out of 5 3.0

Parts that are specifically for the diesel derivatives can be quite high, but normal service items are compatible across the range.

  • On the road

    Driving

    2 out of 5 2.0

Great in a straight line. Soft suspension makes it comfortable but not much fun. Responsiveness is dull.

    Performance

    1 out of 5 1.0

1.9 diesel is at best described as lacklustre. Though once you eventually reach cruising speed, it wont complain. 2.1 turbo diesel is a vast improvement.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

Except for body trim. No major faults to mention.

Down to personal taste. Not exactly sex on wheels, but not an ugly duckling.

    Comfort

    5 out of 5 5.0

Top class. Soft suspension & seats help ride the worst bumps, even sleeping policemen. Tons of legroom (although beware that this is severely compromised on seven seater version).

  • Security and Service

    Security

    3 out of 5 3.0

Reasonable, but dont worry. Nobody will nick it anyway. Even if they did, the police wont take long to catch it.

    Service

    3 out of 5 3.0

    Very helpful.

  • Problems and Ownership

    Other

CV joints are prone to wear. Complete driveshaft is cheap enough and easy to replace.
