Aside from the ‘Night and Day’ limited edition which used a very slow 1.1, the range generally kicks off at the 1.2 mark with the post -96 model offering exceptional economy. Other units are also impressively economical yet manage to offer reasonable performance. 1.8 RSi is a good budget warm hatch whilst 1.8 16v offers similar speed to its legendary big brother the Clio Williams.
Most French cars seem to benefit from a pleasant driving experience, and the Clio also shares this trait feeling nimble about town and giving confidence over twisty roads. Steering is accurate although power assistance was optional on lower spec models. Clio Williams is exceptionally talented and commands much higher prices.
