Renault Laguna Estate 2.0 16V RT Family 5d (SR+AC) (1998/S) Owner Review

Economy
Value
paid over the odds because its the seven seater but as along term investment good value as is so versatile. Massive carrying capacity
Costs
2.0ltr engine is thirsty around town but good on long distance. Renault parts expensive £95 for boot lock assembly, £120 for n/s/r seat belt. Servicing costs can be kept down by using non franchise garages. i.e. cambelt& pulley change + fan belt = £250.

On the road
Driving
excellent long distance tourer with plenty of power. precise power steering. good grip, good ride & very quiet. clutch action is a bit stiff when town driving
Performance
This is the RT Sport model with uprated suspension & the improved 16v engine. 0 to 60 in under 10 seconds. Plenty quick enough for a big estate. Very good tow car also.

Living with it
Reliability
Had the car three years now & has never broken down (tempting fate!). Only faults have been seized tailgate lock & sticky idle control valve. Always starts 1st time
Image
OK its an estate car, but these later Lagunas are quite smart looking. Well put together & generally seem to wear well. 7 years old & still looks good. Great sporty exhaust sound too!
Comfort
Seats not quite as comfy as my old Volvo but driver's seat is fully adjustable as is steering wheel. Driven to Scotland & Lake District from Portsmouth with no problem.

Security and Service
Security
Thatcham 2 immobiliser is good but no dead locks!
Service
Only used franchised dealer once. Labour changes are a joke & parts expensive.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
A sticky idle control valve.
Other
Wiring into tailgate rubbed through on bodywork (design fault) Tailgate lock fault. Bad design using a plastic cam pin rather then a metal one!
