Renault Laguna Sport Tourer (2001 - 2007) 1.8 16V Privilege 5d (2003/53) Owner Review

1.8 16V Privilege 5d
  • Summary

    4 out of 5 4.0

What does this car say about you?

That I can't afford something German and I'm not that fussed about image. Laguna 2's poor reputation meant we got a load of car for the money and personally I think it is one of the best looking estates on the market.

What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?

Everyone thought we were mad to buy an old French car (especially one with such a reputation for troubles). After 4 mostly trouble-free years most now grudgingly admit it was a good buy.

Would you buy this car again and why?

Yes... did everything we needed of it, was cheap to buy and run, reasonably stylish and really comfortable.

What are you likely to buy next?

    Another non-gGrman middle-aged estate car.

  • Buying experience

Type of dealer you bought from?

    Independent

Did you buy this car new?

    No

    What price did you pay?

    £3,300

When did you buy the car?

    January 2010

Did you get a good deal and why?

Car was already cheap so dealer wouldn't budge on price, but compared to other cars we looked at this one was really good value.

Is there any special reason why you bought this car?

Needed a cheep reliable family car and this was the best example we could find in our price range.

    What was the dealer like?

Polite and not too much hard sell. Delivered the car to our house which was nice.

  • Driving it

    3 out of 5 3.0

    What's it like to drive?

Quiet, civilised, a bit dull. Never going to win the traffic light grand prix but will cruise effortlessly on motorway all day.

    What's it like to park?

Good visibility and rear parking sensors help, however it's a surprisingly long car.

  • Living with it

Have you had any problems with the car?

Nothing major. Apart from consumerables we've had to fix a broken spring and replace the electronic boot latch about 4 times (it's a known weakness on the car) but these are only £15 second hand off ebay and very easy to replace. Aluminum effect foil has flaked off the door handles as well, but again this can be fixed with second-hand parts very cheaply.

What's most practical about your car?

Really comfortable, big boot and low running costs.

    Favourite gadget, option or accessory?

Giant sunroof is great in summer. Rear parking sensors and integral sun blinds on rear doors are great (why don't more cars have these).
