Like many Renaults, the Megane scores highly in terms of safety with a five-star Euro NCAP rating and was the first in its class to do so. It’s safety equipment includes a tally of 10 airbags. It has outstanding security too with keyless entry, deadlocks and a Thatcham-approved immobiliser. The Privilege model also benefits from an alarm.

Unless you really love the looks, the boot is the only reason to buy the saloon. It’s impressively sized, although the estate version is even more practical and will be easier to sell. There’s also an air-conditioned glovebox and sunglasses holder plus numerous minor storage areas within the cabin.
