  • Efficient power unit
  • 50+ mpg easily attainable
  • Can’t run on electricity for long

The Renault Symbioz is a full hybrid car, meaning that it utilises fuel in its combustion engine and electricity via an electric motor to drive the wheels. With just a 1.26 kWh battery, though, it can’t run on electric alone for very long – nor can it be charged up at the plug – so the electric motor is largely used to support the work of the engine.

That being said, it is still an efficient unit. Renault claims that the 145hp engine can offer a combined fuel economy of 60.1mpg, as quoted by WLTP. During our test, the best economy we could achieve was around 57mpg, though most of the time it lay somewhere between 51 and 57 through changing road environments. Not bad for a family SUV. As for CO2 produced, the Symbioz churns out between 105g/km and 108g/km, as registered by the WLTP.

The Symbioz is efficient, if a bit down on power.

Servicing and warranty

The Symbioz is covered by Renault’s manufacturer warranty, which protects buyers for up to three years from the first date of registration. The warranty offers unlimited mileage cover for the first two years, then it’s limited to 60,000 miles or the end of the third year – whichever comes first. Renault also offers an EasyLife Service Plan which will cover the costs of servicing requirements for up to four years, starting from £13.99 per month.

Reliability

  • Strong recent history from manufacturer
  • Plenty of tech onboard
  • Hard durable feel

Renault has been on a roll in terms of reliability recently, as few of its latest crop have been recalled. The overall layout of the cabin, including the infotainment set up, is mostly new in the Symbioz, so time will tell if it’s able to hold up to daily wear and tear. Generally speaking though, the Symbioz has the feel of a well-built car, so won’t likely cause you to return to the garage or dealership any time soon.
