Should you buy one?

The Rolls-Royce Cullinan’s price will mean that, for most people, this is an entirely rhetorical question. But if you’re in the happy position of being able to spend this much money on a car, then there is much to commend it.

Unless you live somewhere that makes its physical size a problem, it works very well as everyday-usable family transport. It could be your only car; the fact that the average Rolls owner has seven or so cars is down to their extreme wealth rather than any shortcomings on the part of the Cullinan.

But not everyone, regardless of how wealthy they may be, would be happy driving a car that’s so in-your-face and so unashamedly luxurious and exclusive. However, as much you may dislike what the Cullinan represents, there’s no denying that it’s an exceptionally well-engineered car, exquisitely made, with excellent customer support.

The Cullinan is lovely to drive and even more lovely to be driven in: comfortable, calm and quite quick. But objectively, it doesn’t really do anything that any of its less expensive rivals can’t do. It’s largely perception and preference that distinguish a Cullinan from a Bentley Bentayga, not anything measurable.

Or put it this way: one of these or 10 good second-hand Volkswagen Touaregs?
