Rover 200 Hatchback 1989-
  • Economy

    Value

    4 out of 5 4.0

Similar price to other makes/models, but the trim level is much higher (leather seats, electric windows and sunroof).

    Costs

    4 out of 5 4.0

Generally not bad. Service parts are fairly cheap. The only thing which lets it down is relatively poor fuel consumption (about 35mpg on average).

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

Handling is pretty good - precise around corners with not much roll. It would be nice to have a bit more oomph. The one thing which lets it down is a fairly noisy/high revving engine at motorway speeds.

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

Not as much power as Rover's over-ambitious ratings, but not bad for a 1.4.

    Reliability

    3 out of 5 3.0

Very reliable day-to-day, but has required both a head gasket replacement and a gearbox replacement in its lifetime.

Obviously an eighties style car, but there's something about it that I still find appealing. Its also got alloys, full colour-matched body and 1/2 leather seats.

    Comfort

    5 out of 5 5.0

The seats in these cars are great - firm and curve around you racing style. Don't get sore on long distances and great support for the twisties. I love this car for the seats and driving comfort alone.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    3 out of 5 3.0

Pretty good. Immobiliser and perimeter alarm, but this one was slightly before they introduced the motion sensors. No double-locks.

  • Problems and Ownership

    Problems

    Engine

None - although had head gasket replacement and skim by previous owner.
