Economy
Value
Good equiptment level compared to rivals such as Escort LX.
Costs
Excellent fuel economy, nearing the MPG of most diesels of its size. Reasonable servicing costs.

On the road
Driving
A pleasure to drive around town. A little juddery on rough roads, but exceptionaly smooth on motorways. Overall a comfortable ride.
Performance
A little noisy on motorways, as the 1.4 engine needs to be revved hard to obtain performance. Acceleration is outstanding considering the small 1.4 litre engine under the bonnet.

Living with it
Reliability
I have found this car to be outstanding for reliability in the three years I have owned the vehicle. Other than servicing, I have only had to spend £120 on a water pump.
Image
Average image. Ideal for those who don't want to stand out, disappointing for those who want to turn heads, although the overall design and shaping to the 214 is quite elegant.
Comfort
No grumbles on comfort. Seats are quite comfortable, road surface permitting.

Security and Service
Security
As far as I can tell, this vehicle has no security/immobiliser device whatsoever, although the car is not usually a car that a thief would go for anyhow.
Service
Main Rover dealership is extremely highly priced. I have halfed my servicing bills by using a local small garage and a new waterpump from the dealer was quoting £260 fitted - I paid £120 fitted.

Engine
Just as lively at 80,000 miles as it was at 59,000 when purchased.
Other
Water pump - £120 (local garage), £260 (main dealer). Say no more...
