  • Economy

    Value

    4 out of 5 4.0

Now that Rover have joined most other UK retailers in reducing their prices to fall in line with European costs, and with the re-classing of the model to 'Super-Mini', the 25 makes very good sense.

    Costs

    3 out of 5 3.0

Running costs are average. Rovers have always commanded rather high insurance prices. The TD's fuel economy is excellent considering its performance level. Services from main dealers also steep.

  • On the road

    Driving

    5 out of 5 5.0

The Rover 25 is a more accomplished car to drive than the 200 it replaced. Stiffy suspension and uprated chassis give it a sportier feel. However, the MG-ZR has more thrills per mile.

    Performance

    5 out of 5 5.0

The 25's direct fuel injected, turbo-charged, inter-cooled Diesel engine is a real performer! As much torque as the 75's V6 engine and 101bhp. Fun from a diesel - you bet!

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    5 out of 5 5.0

Mechanically, the 25 is faultless. Gone are the '80s problems of EMU with minds of their own. The petrol K-series engines are award winning marvels and the TD is in a class of its own.

    Image

    4 out of 5 4.0

Rover have had to try hard to ditch their past German owner's remarks and have introduced the MG Saloon range to boost their image. Unfortunately, this distracts from the excellent Rover badged models.

    Comfort

    4 out of 5 4.0

Rear seats are rather upright and hard. Front seats are very supportive and have a good feel. Handling is excellent with wide alloys and the uprated suspension.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    4 out of 5 4.0

Security is very good with perimetric alarm and immobiliser as standard. However, the range is let down by the option of a volumetric alarm, which should be standard equipment.

    Service

    2 out of 5 2.0

Although I have rated this as a 2 star, the overall service is a 4. The service from my original dealer, CD Brammal was appauling, whereas Evans Halshaw were excellent. CHOOSE your dealer!

Some interior trim problems, such as illuminated switches and centre console, but nothing major.
