The second-generation 400 comes as a saloon or hatchback and represents the final Rover-Honda collaboration. It aimed for executive status with lashings of chrome and wood, but size matters in this class, and the compact 400 hatchback can’t compete with Mondeo-sized rivals on interior space. It also looks a dated. That said, ride and comfort are strong points.

Consider a 400 for its all-round ability – but only if the price is not too high. 400 was reborn as the 45 in early 2000.
