Rover 400 Saloon 420 GSi Sport Cat 4d (1992/J) Owner Review

Economy
Value
Forget the badge and this is very good all-round VFM.
Costs
Only let down is insurance grouping. Well-established local garage best bet.

Driving
For a car of this age, mileage, cost and size, it is VERY good, particularly as a 'driver's' car. The easiest to park (in a tight space) car that I have ever had!
Performance
Only criticism is at very low revs. Raise the revs, or take to an A road or motorway and it is very good, and stable with it.

Living with it
Reliability
Timing belt snapped at ??? miles (may have been clocked). Had a rebuild from a write-off. Otherwise, only put a rear silencer on in 2 MOTs.
Image
Worst bit, but does give a few surprises if you put your foot down - and handles VERY good for 100k on original shocks!
Comfort
Noise very good. Seats could be better for long journeys.

Security and Service
Security
I assume average. 2 years on, no problems (wheel lock and visible cat. 2 immobiliser fitted).
Service
Used a local Rover 'specialist'.
