Rover 400 Saloon 420 iS 4d (1999/V) Owner Review

Economy
Value
Lots of costly problems - but could have had the same problems with other cars. Car price was pretty average.
Costs
Reasonably thirsty, very high insurance costs. parts and servicing are very expensive. Lots gone wrong for young(ish) car. £400 for a clutch, £500 for service with cambelt!

On the road
Driving
Very comfortable. Good suspension - firm round corners, but soaks up most bumps. good seats and driving position
Performance
Enough power, but for a 135bhp 2-litre, it certainly doesn't go as well as you'd think. Bit of a groggy engine really!

Living with it
Reliability
What's gone wrong?? Alternator caused intermittent battery drain and needed replacing. Intermittent fault whereby the revs 'stick' at either 1500 or 750rpm. Is currently stranded at work needing a new starter motor! new clutch too! only done 45k!
Image
Has image as old man's car. I keep telling people that it isn't! leather seats, alloys, even wine-red carpets - nice car! I like it very much
Comfort
Very comfortable. Done lots of miles, and haven't really had any comfort problems myself (none from front or rear passengers either). very nice car.

Security and Service
Security
Nobody has stolen it yet! alarm doesn't seem to sound when boot is opened - potentially a bit of an issue in a saloon!
Service
Pretty average. Would love to know where exactly my £550 went for my service. Apart from £170 for cambelt, all i could see were greesed hindges! £380 for greese? Must be good quality stuff!
