Rover 400 Saloon 1996-
  • Economy

    Value

    3 out of 5 3.0

Bought 2nd hand from dealer - a little bit pricey compared to the Honda derivative.

    Costs

    5 out of 5 5.0

Forget main dealer - servicing is easy to do yourself. As for running costs, 55mpg - 60mpg no probs!

    Driving

She's not a BMW, but better than a Vauxhall any day of the week. Only major critism is the turning circle - she's not a fan of tight parking!

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

Straight line she's quick - especially when cranked up at 3500-4000rpm. Uphill will beat pretty much all executive sloggers. Bit hairy on bends!

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

Genarally ok. Couple of minor niggles (see below).

Blobby middle-aged but, hey, we all get like it - okay!

    Comfort

    4 out of 5 4.0

Well supportive seating - no problems. Plenty of room up front, but cramped in the back.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    4 out of 5 4.0

Alarm and immobiliser have saved her - that and a hefty Autolock 2000.

    Service

    1 out of 5 1.0

Bought second hand from main dealer (Rycar Rover in Cardiff). Terrible aftersales service - will go independent next time.

  • Problems and Ownership

    Problems

    Engine

Absolutely bulletproof - went 22,000 miles without oil change and no problems.

    Other

Cam belt tensioner disintergrated after 2 months of ownership - Dealership were an absolute rip-off.
