Rover’s three non-V6 petrol engines (1.4, 1.6 and 1.8) are the tried-and-tested K-Series. The 1.4i is smooth and revs well, but is a little weak; the 1.6 produces a respectable 109 bhp but sounds rather unrefined. The 1.8 has 117 bhp and is the sportiest choice – willing and responsive. Those looking for refinement should look at the smoothly potent V6, which is available in the saloon.
Turbo-diesels compare well to rivals of this age.
Uprated from the old 400 and still a bit harsh at low speed. Otherwise very good. Plush for a medium sized car, but confident in corners, if not exactly thrilling.
