Rover Metro 1.1 C 5d (1995/M) Owner Review

Economy
Value
I paid £450 for the 1995 model, and to be honest I think I got a good deal. With it's pokey engine, reasonable handling and cheap running costs, as a first car or a little run-around, the car rates quite highly.
Costs
Cheap insurance, parts, servicing and low fuel consumption, you can't really ask for more. I can easily get over 200 miles to a full tank, which is a real bonus for anyone on a budget.

On the road
Driving
To say how old this car is I'm quite impressed, it sticks like glue around the corners.
Performance
For it's age and engine size I was really impressed. I also have a 1.2 Corsa and I suspect the Metro can out accelerate it. Handling is great for country roads, you can really slam it into corners.

Living with it
Reliability
When I bought it my Metro had been seriously neglected, yet it still ran fine. After giving it a full service it's been running much better and as yet nothing has gone wrong on the mechanical side. Rust is a major problem though.
Image
Forget it. You don't buy this car for it's looks, you buy it either because you're on a tight budget or you need a really basic run-around for commuting.
Comfort
From a driver's point of view the seats are ok, but they do get uncomfortable after a long drive. As a passenger, as long as you're in the front you're fine. I wouldn't like to be over 5'10"" and sit in the back, not much room at all.

Security and Service
Security
My Metro did come with an alarm system factory fitted, but it has never worked while I've had the car. I can't really think of anybody who'd want to steal a Metro, but if they did they'd have no problem at all.
