Rover charge too much for new Minis. Far better bought secondhand, I paid a bargain £2,800 for my rare S model.

    Costs

    5 out of 5 5.0

Insurance is quite expensive, but it does have 85 bhp! Still reasonably frugal despite the twin carburettors. DIY maintenance is possible.

    Driving

    5 out of 5 5.0

Superb steering response; nimble handling; fun to drive.

    Performance

    5 out of 5 5.0

Not that quick by modern day standards; I cannot think of a better A/B-road blaster.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    3 out of 5 3.0

Really depends on how the car is maintained. Would suggest any prospective owner joins the AA or RAC just in case!

Cooper is still cool, especially the heritage associated with the S tag.

    Comfort

    3 out of 5 3.0

I"m very tall and find long distance driving in the Mini quite tiring. I must be mad as I am contemplating a 3,500-mile trip round Europe!

  • Security and Service

    Security

    2 out of 5 2.0

What security! I've fitted a Category 2 immobiliser, but it"s still all too easy to get into.

    Service

    2 out of 5 2.0

Rover dealers are useless and have little interest in Minis. Seem unable to service them properly either.
