Saab 900 Hatchback 2.0i S 5d (1994/L) Owner Review
-
Economy
Value
Cheap to buy. Lots of car for the money.
Costs
Parts expensive from dealers - try 'EuroCar parts' for big saving. Fuel consumption reasonable (32mpg on average). Insurance average for class of car.

On the road
Driving
Comfortable, but disappointing handling. Ride not great. Good for long distance motorway journeys. Easy to drive.
Performance
Ok for type of car - good midrange torque. Lacks sporty feel of something like a 3-Series BMW.

Living with it
Reliability
Mine has been dismal. Endless electrical problems, CV joints failed, belt idler failed, clutch cable snapped, thermostat failed, starting problems, instruments failed and airbag failed.
Image
Looks expensive. People always think I spent a fortune on it. "Only on spare parts", I tell them. Some ribbing from friends about it being an "old man's" car.
Comfort
Very comfy on long journeys. Heated seats are a Godsend in the winter (when they work). Good ventilation. Good stereo (when it works).

Security and Service
Security
I wish someone WOULD nick it. No such luck so far.
Service
Outstanding service from all Saab dealers dealt with. Expensive, but at least they always valet the car for me and give cups of tea.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Thermostat. Fan belt idler seized causing breakdown. Starting problems.
Other
Electrics: Stereo, instruments, rear light units and airbag. A 'Friday afternoon' car, I think...
