Saab 9000 Hatchback 2.3 Turbo 16 CSE 5d (1996/N) Owner Review
-
Economy
Value
At £30k new, now represents excellent VFM.
Costs
Fuel costs very good (36 mpg on a long run), servicing not cheap even main avoiding dealers.
-
On the road
Driving
Cruise not for chucking around B roads, understeers like hell if pushed.
Performance
Front tyres can't cope with the power off the line, but the safest overtaker you could hope for.
-
Living with it
Reliability
So far so good again, ignition cartridge failure at 150k left me at the mercy of a £200 bill for a 30 sec repair.
Image
You don't buy Saab to be part of the herd. Be distinctive, different and plough your own furrow.
Comfort
Regularly do a 500 mile run without problems, cruise and climate ensure the ideally restful environment.

Security and Service
Security
So far so good.
Service
Don't skimp on servicing. Parts aren't too bad, get someone other than the franchise dealer to fit them.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Nearly 170k and still pulling like a train (touch wood that's not the kiss of death).
Other
Ate bulbs for a while and a regular stream of rubber bits (bushes, gaiters and hoses) wearing out.
