Although it’s not been specifically crash-tested by Euro NCAP, the XL is part of the Altea range which means it gets the same maximum five-star rating as the standard car for. It ticks all the boxes for standard safety kit, too, with six airbags, ABS, emergency brake assist and traction control. On the security front, there’s an alarm, immobiliser and remote central locking.

With the seats folded down, there’s a huge load area and more than enough space to cope with the jobs that come with family life. Despite the huge volume of 1,604 litres overall, the seats aren’t as flexible as they could be. For instance they don’t fold into the floor, which means the load area isn’t flat – a feature that some other cars of this type offer.

Inside, there’s loads of storage space though, including big door bins, a large glovebox and several cupholders.
