Ibiza’s engine line up comprises of three petrols: 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 20V and three 1.9 diesels: 68 bhp SDI and 90/110 bhp TDIs. 1.4 models are adequate performers, but lack refinement. 1.6 is a lot thirstier (36.2 mpg as opposed to the 1.4’s 42.8 mpg), but is happier on the motorway. The 156 bhp 1.8 20V Cupra is a real stormer, capable of 0-60 in 7.9 seconds and a top speed of 135 mph.
VW underpinnings show up on the road where the solid handling inspires confidence and gives a composed feel at speed. However, it’s not as agile as a Fiesta and the ride is hard.
