Should you buy a Skoda Fabia?

The Skoda Fabia is a car that’s easy to overlook thanks to the presence of newer and perhaps more fashionable rivals, but that doesn’t mean it should be ignored. On top of the now comparatively dated architecture is a spacious, cheap-to-run and easy-to-drive supermini that, in the right spec, also boasts a healthy selection of standard kit.

It’s not quite as sharp to drive as a SEAT Ibiza, or as nicely finished as the Volkswagen Polo, but it does share near identical powertrains to both and can match either for cabin space and practicality. If you’re after a cheap, honest small car the Fabia remains an accomplished option.

For those looking for the cheapest Fabia, then the 60hp 1.0-litre MPI version will do the job. It’s not a huge amount more economical or lower on CO2 than the turbocharged TSI versions, but it is cheaper to buy and insure – perfect for a first car.

Note, however, that it is not suited to motorway driving and may struggle at higher speeds due to its low power output.

The 95hp 1.0-litre version will likely be all the Fabia you’ll ever need. It’s not punitively expensive to run and has just enough performance to mean it won’t feel out of place on a fast-moving motorway.

If you need a more powerful model, however, then the 110hp version is the one to choose.

For the best value for money, seek out an SE L model or higher. Equipment levels are generous and include climate control, sat-nav, cruise control and keyless ignition, plus it gives you access to the full range of engines.
